A WHOLESOME LOOK
1880's---1919

Like other manufacturers, early cigarette makers understood and took advantage of the fact that children and young women could and would successfully entice smokers to buy their brands. Trade cards and posters pictured "fine ladies of the theatre" and other beautiful young women. The norm was a pretty face above and a slim ankle below, with yards and yards of dress material in-between. Occasionally a bare breasted nude was produced, but these were rare. Victorian prejudice against women smoking was appeased somewhat by artists picturing women with 'American' features in a harem or oriental setting. It wasn't until after World War One, which contributed to the emancipation of women, that American women were pictured actually holding a cigarette.
