GREAT-GRANDDAD'S FAVORITES
1880---1900
Cigarettes date back to the Aztecs and the Mayans. Reeds filled with tobacco, cigarettes of a sort, were used by these cultures 1000 years ago. The first paper cigarette was rolled in 1832 by an Egyptian cannoneer during the siege of Acre. A gift of tobacco, a broken clay pipe, and extra 'pistils', the paper tubes filled with gunpower that a cannoneer uses, eventually became today's modern filter tip. The colorful slide-and-shell boxes pictured below were made in America between 1886 and 1900.
