Between the two world wars, the great cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, China played unwilling host to the Imperial Japanese Army, England's Seaforth Highlanders, French Foreign Legionnaires, and the 4th regiment of United States Marines. Soldiers and sailors, travelers and businessmen knew well the delights of this 'open port'. The Bund, Bubbling Well Road, the Cathay Mansions Hotel, White Russians and cabaret hostesses were the center of nightlife. The different brands of cigarettes pictured below were some of those available locally. Customs examiners allowed visitors entering Shanghai only 206 cigarettes or 1/2 pound tobacco duty free.
