MAKE IT LOOK EGYPTIAN
1900---ca. 1966

Catering to a metropolitan clientele who wanted that 'extra something,' Turkish cigarette brands were works of art featuring images of the exotic Orient. Hinged boxes, tins, and flat 50's were embossed, embellished, and adorned with Arabs, caliphs, caravans, and harem beauties. Bridging the gap between fantasy and reality wasn't awfully important to most cigarette manufacturers. Their instructions to a graphic artist might have gone something like this: "Make it look Egyptian." Advertising for these mostly big-city, Eastern and class conscious cigarettes stressed a "gentleman's smoke."
